Halloween 2018|Part II|Hermione Granger

I know I say this every year but this girl of mine, she is fierce and brave, kind and smart as all get out! So I was thrilled when she asked to be Hermione Granger for Halloween this year. I think she nailed it … sass, bossiness, and spunk included!  I love her spirit, her confidence, and how comfortable she with who she is.

Halloween 2018|Part I|Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Happy Halloween! Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

My son and I had such a wonderful time with this costume this year.  Mr. Rogers was such a influential figure in my own childhood and I have nothing but fond memories of his programs.  My children have only had a taste, but my husband and I have both spent so much time talking about our fond memories of Mr. Rogers and finding old episodes to show our children that they know and appreciate who he was and what he represented as well.

Halloween 2018 - Yuri 002 - CR

Last night, when very few people recognized his costume at a party that we attended, Yuri was little disappointed.  We came home and washed away any of those feeling by watching the deeply moving “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” documentary about Mr. Rogers.  Despite this being my second viewing, I bawled my eyes out again.  If you haven’t seen this phenomenal film, I emphatically encourage you to see it. It will move you and inspire you.  It will remind you of the power and simplicity of love, the far reaching effects of empathy, the simple act of kindness and how deeply they can affect a generation … and the generation after that and onward.

This boy of mine, he knows how to show empathy, patience and kindness with younger children, and has a heart of gold. If he’s going to emulate anyone, I can’t think of a better role model than the likes of Mr. Rogers. Watching him grow and change and become the wonderful young man that he is today is one of the greatest joys of my life.

Halloween 2017 | Part II | Pirate Captain

Listen!  This girl of mine has so much spunk and moxie!  She is no push over and rocks it out at Taekwondo every week with her power kicks and fierce determination and discipline.  She is this amazing blend of kindness and courage.  And that usually means that her costume choices are always interesting and you can never tell which direction they will take, as we saw when she wanted to be Red Riding Hood one year and then next decided to be The Wolf!

This year she decided that a Pirate Captain was the way to go!  And friends, not just a Pirate, but to be clear, a Pirate Captain.  Because if she was going to be a pirate, we both agreed that she wouldn’t just be some random pirate, but the Captain.  She’s a boss lady already.  For the past two years she always says to me, “Mommy, let’s be boss ladies together, okay?” Indeed!

Halloween 2017 | Part I | Kakashi Sensei

Alas, another year has passed in the blink of an eye!  I have missed this space and am returning this month to regular blogging here.  But for today, I return with our annual Halloween costume photo shoots.  This year has been a big year for Japanese Anime at our house, at least for my son.  And so here is is as Kakashi Sensei from the anime Naruto.

He finally has an official headband now, but for over a year he has made DIY versions using old soda cans and perfected his prototypes meticulously.  It was so fun to see his joy to have the real deal.  And he worked so hard on making sure we got as many details of the Kakashi character right as possible.  I love to watch my kids really get into character!  And let’s face it, we love a good photo shoot around here … did I say that last year? I probably did! It’s still true this year.

Hope you had a wonderful Halloween!

Warmly,

Magdalena

P.S. For reference, the original Kakashi Sensei

Halloween 2016 | Part II | Cinderella

Last year’s wolf transforms into this year’s elegant vision in blue … Cinderella!  Much discussion was had in regards to which version of Cinderella we should go with, the old classic or the latest modern re-envisioning.  In the end, we had a beautiful blue dress already and decided to work with the elements we had to retell this story in our own way.  But here she is … my very own sweet and kind Cinderella.  She keeps growing entirely too fast, and having just celebrated her 5th birthday two months ago, she believes herself to be a rather grown young lady … though her father is doing his best to remind her that she is not quite there yet.  Just as with big brother’s photos, we took to our downtown after dark (which is earlier and earlier these days) and imagined we were racing out of the ball as the clock struck midnight!

Lots of warm wishes for a lovely day for you all!  May your memories be sweet, filled with touches of magic and whimsy, and lots of laughs and good cheer today!

With love,

Magdalena

Halloween 2016 | Part I | Marty McFly

It hardly seems possible that an entire year has flown by since I last wrote here.  It has been a season of change and growth in many ways, and also simply a very busy year for me, but I will be returning to the space shortly because I am itching to be writing again.

In the meantime, another Halloween and another set of costume adventures for our family.  This year for my son, we hopped on the time travel train, or rather Delorean, and had lots of fun playing Marty McFly from the Back to the Future series!  The costume was seemingly simple, if it weren’t for the fact that apparently finding a red puffer vest was trickier than I had anticipated.  But we finally pulled it all together and we had so much fun doing our photo shoot after dark in our downtown.

Hope your Halloween is filled with lots of wonderful family memories!  Stay tuned for Part II where last year’s wolf transforms into a lovely and elegant vision in blue!

With Love,

Magdalena

Happy Halloween :: Part II :: My Canadian Mountie

Texas may be my home now, but I grew up in Canada and love so much about Canadian culture.  So when this handsome guy gave me the high five on being a Canadian Mountie this year for Halloween, I was so excited.

My heart swells with pride to see him looking so handsome in uniform!  And he had so much fun with it and loved getting into character.
