Halloween 2016 | Part II | Cinderella

Last year’s wolf transforms into this year’s elegant vision in blue … Cinderella!  Much discussion was had in regards to which version of Cinderella we should go with, the old classic or the latest modern re-envisioning.  In the end, we had a beautiful blue dress already and decided to work with the elements we had to retell this story in our own way.  But here she is … my very own sweet and kind Cinderella.  She keeps growing entirely too fast, and having just celebrated her 5th birthday two months ago, she believes herself to be a rather grown young lady … though her father is doing his best to remind her that she is not quite there yet.  Just as with big brother’s photos, we took to our downtown after dark (which is earlier and earlier these days) and imagined we were racing out of the ball as the clock struck midnight!

Lots of warm wishes for a lovely day for you all!  May your memories be sweet, filled with touches of magic and whimsy, and lots of laughs and good cheer today!

With love,

Magdalena

Halloween 2016 | Part I | Marty McFly

It hardly seems possible that an entire year has flown by since I last wrote here.  It has been a season of change and growth in many ways, and also simply a very busy year for me, but I will be returning to the space shortly because I am itching to be writing again.

In the meantime, another Halloween and another set of costume adventures for our family.  This year for my son, we hopped on the time travel train, or rather Delorean, and had lots of fun playing Marty McFly from the Back to the Future series!  The costume was seemingly simple, if it weren’t for the fact that apparently finding a red puffer vest was trickier than I had anticipated.  But we finally pulled it all together and we had so much fun doing our photo shoot after dark in our downtown.

Hope your Halloween is filled with lots of wonderful family memories!  Stay tuned for Part II where last year’s wolf transforms into a lovely and elegant vision in blue!

With Love,

Magdalena

Happy Halloween :: Part II :: My Canadian Mountie

Texas may be my home now, but I grew up in Canada and love so much about Canadian culture.  So when this handsome guy gave me the high five on being a Canadian Mountie this year for Halloween, I was so excited.

My heart swells with pride to see him looking so handsome in uniform!  And he had so much fun with it and loved getting into character.

Happy Halloween :: Part I :: The Big Bad Wolf

Halloween 2015 - The Big Bad Wolf : I : The Bluestocking At Home

Last year she rocked the Little Red Riding Hood costume … this year she absolutely, without any hesitation said she wanted to be The Wolf!  And even when we talked about other ideas, she would respond with, “Okay, but next year because this year I am being a wolf!”

Remembrance & Hope :: LUCA

In September we lit a candle for Luca.  It has been seven years and in some ways I thought that it would be easier when his day comes around so many years later, but the more that time passes the more I am left wondering what he would have been like today.  My almost seven years old running and playing with his siblings.  What would his interests be?  His eyes, his smile, his laugh?

Today I am writing and sharing over at Holy Beautiful and reflecting on this journey.  I hope you will join me over there as we remember our angels.

For Luca

Lighting a candle to remember today,
A tiny boy who was here for a moment, but who couldn’t stay.

We remember my love, and we will never forget,
The sad day you came, but had already left.

Though seven years have passed today,
It does not make any of this easier to say,

I love you my darling, and I wish you could be,
Here in this moment with your family.

We love you, sweet Luca, you will always be,
Our beautiful angel, who one day we’ll see,

On the other side of this brief moment in time we call life,
This moment where we feel so deeply the hurt and the strife.

But there I will hold you and kiss your sweet face,
And my heart will no longer carry a trace,

Of the sadness and grief I still feel today,
When remembering the day you came, but couldn’t stay.

Love, Mommy

With Love,

Magdalena

Simple Pleasures

Summer is upon us.  For the most part, our months and months of torrential rains here in East Texas have subsided.  School is out!  Swimming lessons, art classes, and popsicles are in, and our pace is decidely more relaxed.

All is not completely quiet; lots of exciting adventures and projects are brewing, but I am aiming to carve out quiet moments and striving to be intentional in allowing myself to enjoy simple pleasures.

Here’s a peek at what’s inspiring me these days ::

Bluestocking At Home :: Journal and Darling Magazine :: Magdalena Altnau

Darling Magazine is one of my favourite publications!  It is the epitome of simple elegance and inspiration.  And the amazing ladies at The Well Studio are inspiring me to remember to Dream Big Pray Bigger!  I couldn’t agree more!

Bluestocking At Home :: Savouring Coffee :: Magdalena Altnau

I don’t drink coffee often.  Perhaps a few times a month.  But when I do, it is always more fun to pull out the good china and really savour it!

And of course, whenever possible turn it into an art project!

Bluestocking At Home :: Summer Reading 2015 :: Magdalena Altnau

A glimpse at some of my summer reading list! Bluestocking At Home :: Onions I :: Magdalena Altnau

Despite my best efforts, most of my gardening attempts continue to be thwarted!  But I will keep plugging away.  In the meantime, despite the heavy rains, it would appear that my onions were not a total loss and though they are small, it gave me such great pleasure to pull these from the garden this morning!  I haven’t given up hope on the potatoes yet, either!  So cross your fingers for me.  There is also a chance for meyer lemons, which are undoubtedly my favourite variety of lemons, but I don’t want to jinx myself until they get bigger and actually start turning yellow.

Bluestocking At Home - Onions II :: Magdalena Altnau

I hope that summer is treating you well!  That you find the beauty in your own simple and quiet moments.  That inspiration finds you in the loveliest and most unexpected ways; and that you take the time to savour and indulge in the simple pleasures!

Beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm depend on simplicity.

One Foggy Morning

On mornings when I wake to a veil of thick mist sitting heavy on the landscape my heart skips and I feel that for a brief moment there is room to be still.  Like a warm embrace, fog reminds us to slow down, to pause, to savour.

Soon enough, the sun will rise and its warmth will lift this veil, pulling it higher and higher to the tree tops until at last the final wisps will float away like faint clouds on morning breezes.  And the bustle of the day will once again sweep us away and carry us onward.  Our pace will quicken, cars will speed past us just that little bit quicker, children will spill out of buildings to run and play and their laughter and voices will carry in the wind.

But in those early morning moments, when you can hardly see but a few feet in front of you there is little choice but to move through the landscape with more care and heightened intention.

One Foggy Morning I :: Magdalena Altnau Photography :: The BlueStocking At Home :: 2015

Fog is often synonymous with confusion and lack of clarity.  And yet, fog sharpens the eye.  You must be intentional about your steps, you must walk with eyes open.  Fog is illuminating.  Fog casts the world through entirely new eyes and in a new light; its details softened and highlighted in the same stroke.

Through my lens I am always seeking the light, chasing it, hoping to capture it just so.  Fog filters the light in new ways and draws the eye to unnoticed corners.  It may obscure, but that which it illuminates it does with subtly and grace.  Though we yearn for the bright rising sun it can cast a harsh glare and blind.  Chasing light is a delicate dance and more light does not always ensure clearer vision.

One Foggy Morning II :: Magdalena Altnau Photography :: The BlueStocking At Home :: 2015

In the fog, senses are honed.  Lack of vision tunes the ear, it heightens intuition.  Rushing will only disorient and confuse.

I eagerly pursue the fog.  Some mornings that means the frantic grabbing of camera and lenses in the hope of capturing those moments before it lifts.  But most often it means a time for reflection.  A moment for the mind to be still.  For the chatter to subside and for the spirit to gather inspiration and to rest.  A time to be present and to just be.  The urge to be in constant motion is silenced, hastiness must be checked.  There is wisdom in the slowing.

Fog & The Rising Sun I :: Magdalena Altnau Photography :: The BlueStocking At Home :: 2015

And as sure as the rising sun, the veil of mist and fog never fails to lift.  But cherished are the lessons learned in the stillness.  There will always be rushing, the hours and days will slip through our fingers, the years will grow in number.  May they be best counted through the moments we chose to savour.

Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.
